Until recently, the prevailing view assumed lorem ipsum was born as a nonsense text. \u201cIt’s not Latin, though it looks like it, and it actually says nothing,\u201d Before & After magazine \u201cIts \u2018words\u2019 loosely approximate the frequency with which letters occur in English, which is why at a glance it looks pretty real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The placeholder text, beginning with the line\u00a0\u201cLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit\u201d, looks like Latin because in its youth, centuries ago, it was Latin. Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar from Hampden-Sydney College, is\u00a0credited\u00a0with discovering the source behind the ubiquitous filler text. In seeing a sample of\u00a0lorem ipsum, his interest was piqued by\u00a0consectetur \u2014a genuine, albeit rare, Latin word. Consulting a Latin dictionary led McClintock to a passage from\u00a0De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum<\/p>\n\n\n\n
